| Biography |
Noted
for their award-winning precision musicianship
& for "bringing new energy to Irish
traditional music," the David Munnelly
Band has been making waves on both sides of
the Atlantic with their exuberant & unique
style of playing, based in the West Mayo tradition,
as wild, free, and awe inspiring as the rugged
West Coast of Ireland. Many of their ragtime-inflected
Irish tunes are inspired by the golden era of
the Irish-American dance hall, and the exuberant
spirit of the 1920s and '30s masters including
the Roaring 20's Flanagan Brothers. In concert
their tunes are for the most part played fast,
with immense precision and a live excitement
not often duplicated.
Born and raised in County Mayo, David Munnelly
is an exciting young Irish button accordionist
and an award-winning composer. He toured with
The Chieftains from the age of 21-25 & is
featured on their CD Water from the Well.
He also toured with De Danaan and other legendary
Irish artists, all before the age of twenty-five!
Now touring the world with his own group, his
second CD "By Heck" was recently released
in North America following critical and popular
acclaim in Ireland, Europe & Japan. He and
his band have appeared worldwide on BBC television
and in America on PBS and NPR specials.
The David Munnelly Band delighted audiences
throughout America & Europe in 2006, performing
at festivals & concert halls, including
The Kennedy Center, where families danced in
the aisles to the bands infectious music,
as well as the world's largest Irish festival,
Milwaukee's Irish Fest, Ireland's prestigious
Ballyshannon Festival, & Europe's largest
festival, Belgium's Dranouter Festival. Wherever
they appear, the music & energy of the David
Munnelly Band is immensely appealing to audiences.
"The David Munnelly Band is something special.
Their skill, invention, and daring [are] exhilarating,"
says the Irish Echo's Earle Hitchner. "And
Munnelly can swing. Every time he picks up the
box, he guarantees excitement." Upcoming
2007 highlights include performances at Glasgows
Celtic Connections Festival, Tulsas Performing
Arts Center, Milwaukees Irish Fest, Kansas
Walnut Valley Festival, New Yorks Old
Songs Festival, and St. Patricks Day at
Atlantas marvelous Spivey Hall.
With
bookings into 2009, discover why music critic
Aiden Crossey states, Music like this
doesnt come along every day. Hitch a ride
with Munnelly & enjoy the journey!
